Shrine of Fátima
Known throughout the world because of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fátima, this shrine is considered one of the largest Marian devotion centers in Portugal and was much cherished by Pope John Paul II.
A pilgrimage site par excellence, it receives devotees every day. On May 13th, the number of devotees who visit the site is greatly larger because this day marks the date of the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima to the little shepherds.
One of the most important events is the Candles Procession on the night of May 12th, when thousands of candles held up by believers fill the Shrine square, giving this place a magical atmosphere of communion and religious devotion.
This monumental shrine houses the Prayer Area, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity and the Little Chapel of Apparitions, which is located exactly where Our Lady asked the shepherds to build the chapel.
This year (2017), the shrine celebrates the Centennial of the Apparitions of Fatima. The highlight of the celebrations will be take place on May 12th and 13th, during the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis.
