Castle of Guimarães

In the 10th century, after the death of her husband Count Hermenegildo, Countess Mumadona Dias takes charge of the Portucalense County and orders the building of the Monastery of Santa Maria in the lower part of the city.

In order to protect the monks and the Christian community that lived around the area from the constant attacks by the Moors and the Normans, the city builds the Castle of Guimarães.

In the 12th century, the Portucalense County is well developed. The Count D. Henrique and D. Teresa start living in Guimarães and carrying out major works to enlarge and make the castle stronger. Tradition says that the castle became their official residence and was the place where D. Afonso Henriques was born.
