Known as the the first fully Gothic work in Portugal, the Alcobaça Monastery is one of the first foundations of the Cistercian Order in Portugal.
The monastery was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site and holds several characteristics of the Manueline and Baroque style, making it a mandatory stop for everyone visiting the region.
Its church is about 100 meters long and is the largest Gothic religious site in Portugal.
When inside, we strongly advise you to visit the Chapels, the Chapter House, the Dining Room and the Kitchen, the Room of the Monks and the Dormitory. Here you can also visit the largest Portuguese medieval cloister, the Cloister of Silence.
One of the highlights of the visit are the tombs of D. Pedro and D. Inês, the most famous lovers of the Portuguese history.
